  •    Every nine seconds a woman is battered in this country. 

  •    At least 1.8 million women are battered each year in the United States. 

  •    Every 46 seconds an adult woman is forcibly raped.

  •    70% of men who abuse their female partners also abuse the children.

  •    It is estimated that 1 out of every 4 girls and 1 out of every 6 boys will be sexually abused by the time they are 18 years old.  90% of the time, the child knows their attacker.

  •    Each year 3.3 million children in the United States witness their mother being beaten.

  •    Battering is the single major cause of death to women.  More women are injured from battering every year than from car accidents, muggings, and stranger rapes combined.  50-80% of the women treated at hospital emergency rooms are there for injuries inflicted by their mother.

  •    Between 2000 and 4000 women are beaten to death each year in the U.S.

  •    Suicides of 20% of white women and 50% of black women are preceded by incidents of domestic abuse.

  •    Victims of domestic violence and sexual assault feel frightened, angry, helpless, depressed or ashamed.

  •    60% of all married women experience physical violence by their husbands at some time during their marriage.

  •    Only 10% of all sexual assaults are reported to the police.  When the attacker is known to the victim, only 4% are reported to the police.

  •    68% of boys between the ages of 11 and 20, who commit murder, kill the man who has beating their mother.

  •    Up to 50% of all homeless women and children in this country are fleeing domestic violence.

  •    80% of men who batter commit no other crimes.

  •    The U.S. has 4 times as many animal shelters for abused dogs and cats as it does for abused women.

  •    85-90% of the time, victims of rape know their attackers.  Strangers commit 10-15% of rapes.
